action removes over one tonne of waste from Tróia beaches as hotel reinforces environmental commitment

The Tróia Design Hotel has renewed its international Biosphere certification, a recognition awarded to tourism businesses that integrate sustainable practices into their daily operations, across environmental, social and governance areas. This renewal reinforces the hotel’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and to the positive impact it seeks to generate in its surrounding territory.

In parallel, on 17 January, the hotel partnered with Wild Tróia, a coastal clean-up initiative held on the Tróia Peninsula that brought together 95 volunteers. The action took place across Bico das Lulas and Costa Galé beaches and resulted in the collection of 1.14 tonnes of waste.

Local action, shared responsibility

Wild Tróia was launched by Inês Maçarico, under the Raiz Azul Project, and gained early support from several local entities and partners. As a partner in the initiative, Tróia Design Hotel provided logistical and food support, distributing 70 kits that included water, juice, sandwiches, pastries, biscuits, energy bars and fruit — with contributions from suppliers Sogenave and Aviludo.

The event also received support from a wide network of local partners: Rotas do SalSetúbal AliveLongitude(vessels), Infratróia (cleaning equipment and waste transport), Brigada do Mar (land support), Atlantic Ferries (ticket provision), Meu Super (food supply), and Marina de Tróia (docking facilities).

Environmental focus recognised by certification

The Biosphere certification highlights the hotel’s work in areas such as reducing plastic use, promoting responsible consumption, encouraging sustainable mobility, using eco-friendly cleaning products, and maintaining active community engagement — particularly relevant given the hotel’s location within a Natural Reserve.

Victor Cópio, General Manager of Tróia Design Hotel, stated:

“The renewal of the Biosphere certificate confirms a consistent and ongoing effort in the area of sustainability. Supporting community-driven initiatives that contribute to preserving the territory we are part of is a natural extension of this commitment.”

Inês Maçarico, founder of the initiative, added:

“Raiz Azul seeks to foster a more conscious and responsible relationship with the environment. Collaborating with entities that share these values is key to giving scale, consistency and real impact to initiatives like Wild Tróia.”

Sustainability rooted in place

By renewing its Biosphere certification and supporting grassroots actions like Wild Tróia, the Tróia Design Hotel reaffirms its dedication to sustainable tourismenvironmental protection, and the responsible development of the Alentejo coast.
