The month of October 2025 saw a 13% increase in the number of company insolvencies compared to the same month in 2024, according to data released by Iberinform. This growth was mainly driven by the telecommunications, agriculture, fishing and hunting, and transport sectors.
Between January and October 2025, 1,731 insolvencies were declared, while in the same period more than 44 thousand new companies were created. Still, the latest data show that the pace of new company creation slowed in October.
The districts of Bragança, Viana do Castelo and Leiria recorded the sharpest increases in insolvencies, all above 20%. On the other hand, the Alentejo showed a distinct evolution, with emphasis on the districts of Évora and Beja, where there were reductions in the number of bankruptcies.
Despite the slowdown in October, the annual balance in business creation remains positive. The regions of Lisbon and Porto concentrated the largest number of new companies, totaling more than 20 thousand. The city of Évora stood out with a growth of 11% compared to the same period of the previous year.
