Adega Velha highlights living tradition and community life in Mourão

Family-run space preserves Alentejo gastronomy, memory and cultural continuity

In Mourão, daily life follows a calm and distinctive rhythm, shaped by close social ties, shared memory and a balanced relationship between heritage and contemporary reality. Surrounded by historic walls and a landscape transformed by the nearby water reservoir, the village has preserved its identity while adapting to change.

The people of Alentejo remain central to this setting. Hospitality, informal sharing and the transmission of traditions continue to define community life, reinforcing a strong sense of belonging even as the region welcomes new visitors and opportunities.

Located in the heart of the village, Adega Velha stands as a clear example of this continuity. More than a restaurant, it functions as a meeting place where material tradition — visible in clay amphorae, wooden furniture and the structure of the space — coexists with a contemporary approach to welcoming guests.

The former wine cellar was revitalised more than thirty years ago by Joaquim, who restored the building and gave it new social meaning. Over time, Adega Velha became one of Mourão’s most emblematic spaces, closely associated with regional gastronomy and communal life.

Today, the project is carried forward by Joaquim’s twin sons, Pedro and Ricardo. Although they did not grow up in Mourão, they chose to continue the family legacy, ensuring the transmission of tradition to the next generation and reinforcing the strong family character of the space.

The menu remains faithful to Alentejo cuisine, based on long-established recipes and local products, attracting visitors from across Portugal and abroad. Spontaneously, traditional Alentejo singing often emerges among diners, integrating naturally into the atmosphere and reinforcing the cultural dimension of the place.

In Mourão, identity is built through everyday practices, landscapes and shared spaces. Adega Velha reflects this reality, affirming itself as an open house, a place of gathering and a living expression of Alentejo culture.
